Keep Your Kids Busy at the Bay this Summer

Looking for fun activities to do with the family at the cottage this summer? Look no further than our sister associations Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve (GBBR), Georgian Bay Land Trust (GBLT), and Georgian Bay Forever (GBF) offering a wide range of programs and activities to keep you and your kids active and engaged at the cottage.

Summer at Home with Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve

GBBR staff have created a great slate of fun, engaging, and educational activities for kids and families to complete at home. Check out their weekly Kids in the Biosphere Blog, join GBBR’s iNaturalist project, and see how many things you can find on the Complete Summer Scavenger Hunt. There are also activity pages and books available on their website. The complete list of program offerings can be found here.

For the adults, GBBR has also launched the Explore Our Shores summer webinar series in partnership with the Township of the Archipelago. These are free, interactive presentations and registration is required. The complete list of webinars and registration information can be found here.

Georgian Bay Land Trust presents Kids’ Conservation Quest

If your nature-loving kids are looking for things to do this summer the Georgian Bay Land Trust is offering a series of free, weekly at-home nature activities geared to kids ages 8-12. Every Monday from June 29 – August 31, a new activity will be emailed to participants and posted online. Kids will learn about Georgian Bay’s plants and animals, explore their environment, and discover how they can play a positive role in the natural world. Kids will have the opportunity to share their discoveries by email and have their results posted in a weekly blog.

Example activities include:

  • night-time nature walk
  • bird song identification
  • build a butterfly feeder
  • and more!

Learn more about the program and sign up here.

Join Georgian Bay Forever’s Families for Change (F4C) Program

Families For Change is back with version 3.0 – challenging new and participating families to do more because the family unit can be a powerhouse for long-term change. There is no contest this time around, but if you and your family are concerned about climate change, plastic pollution and wetland health, join Georgian Bay Forever (GBF)’s Families For Change (F4C) program.

How does it work?

It’s entirely up to your family. GBF’s F4C program can take as much or as little time as you and your family have to devote to it. Choose from 15 tasks that get your family engaged in helping our future environment.

The categories include: eating for the planet, reducing shoreline litter, clothing and transport choices, and preserve wetlands.

Even though there is no contest this time around, but we encourage challenging another family (in a virtual way during these times).

Please join families making a difference in reducing our collective impacts on the future of the environment. To find out more, click here.

Cleaning your own shoreline? You can provide valuable data to Georgian Bay Forever on litter. Why? So we can clean up some of the pollution on our shores and at the same pinpoint what it is and where it is coming from so we can stop it. Click here for more information on cleaning your shoreline in a physical-distancing way.
