Would You Survive a Cold Water Immersion? This Workshop Could Help

Many Canadian boaters are aware of hypothermia but most are not aware that it is the ‘final stage’ your body reaches after being in cold water. Many people die during the first few minutes of immersion in cold water and they are not hypothermic, they simply drown due to the immediate, involuntary and often deadly effects of cold water.

The cold water season on Georgian Bay is quickly approaching, beginning in October and lasting through June. If you plan to be out on the water during this time, prepare yourself for the season by taking a virtual Cold Water Awareness workshop featuring Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht (aka Professor Popsicle), a world-renowned expert in hypothermia. Workshops take place over 2 evenings from 8:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) have ten workshops currently available through the fall and winter:

  1. Tuesday, October 4 & Thursday, October 6, 2022
  2. Tuesday, October 18 & Thursday, October 20, 2002
  3. Tuesday, November 22 & Thursday, November 24, 2022
  4. Tuesday, November 29 & Thursday, December 1, 2022
  5. Tuesday, January 10 & Thursday, January 12, 2023
  6. Tuesday, January 24 & Thursday, January 26, 2023
  7. Tuesday, February 7 & Thursday, February 9, 2023
  8. Tuesday, February 21 & Thursday, February 23, 2023
  9. Tuesday, March 7 & Thursday, March 9, 2023
  10. Tuesday, March 21 & Thursday, March 23, 2023

The workshops focus on everything you need to know to survive an accidental cold water immersion and how to help others who may have become hypothermic.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the Myths Around Cold Water Immersion and Hypothermia
  • How Our Bodies React to Heat and Cold Stimuli
  • 4 Ways Our Bodies Lose Heat
  • What Happens to Our Bodies When Immersed in Cold Water
  • Immersion vs. Submersion in Cold Water
  • Cold Water Survival and Thermal Protective Clothing
  • Basic First Response…When You’re The Only One Who Can Help!
  • The Decision to Stay or Swim When You’re on Your Own

The cost of this online Cold Water Workshop is $100 and participants will receive a certificate of completion.
