ToA Announces New Initiative to Reduce Food Waste
Waste management in rural and small communities is an important and challenging topic. These communities face more issues than larger communities that are able to use waste collection services, due to their size, resources, and location. The municipalities that fall within GBA’s area are no different and face challenges with waste management and collection, especially with a large amount of properties on islands. This is a topic that GBA is focused on for our members and communities within the GBA area.
The Township of the Archipelago (ToA) has announced a new Food Waste Initiative under a partnership with Food Cycle Science. The initiative allows for residents to purchase FoodCycler food waste diversion products at a discounted price via the municipality. Residents who purchase these products are asked to participate in a 12-week study to collect information on total waste diversion. ToA has set out the objectives for the initiative as:
- Enable the community to deal with food waste
- Eliminate one-third of waste going to landfill
- Extend the lifespan of the Site 9 landfill
- Reduce carbon emissions by dealing with waste at its source.
The township has also updated their waste management by-law which can be found here.
