Species at Risk Classification has Changed for Cougars, Foxsnakes and Bald Eagles
On January 29, 2024, the Species at Risk in Ontario List was amended to reflect new species at risk classifications recommended by the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO). This independent Committee of experts reviews, assesses and classifies at-risk species.
Of interest to Georgian Bay:
- the cougar, previously classified as endangered has been reclassified as special concern
- the eastern foxsnake which was previously classified as endangered has been reclassified as threatened
- the bald eagle which had been classified as special concern, has been removed from the list entirely because COSSARO determined that the species is no longer at risk
