Volunteer Water Monitoring Program
The Lake Partner Program (LPP) is Ontario’s largest volunteer-based water monitoring initiative. For 25 years, dedicated volunteers have been sampling water and recording clarity in over 550 lakes at over 850 sites across the province. The data is sent to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for analysis and contributes to a long-term record of lake health—available to the public online.
Mission: To build awareness, encourage stewardship of Ontario’s lakes, and maintain a long-term, science-based record of water quality in inland lakes.
How It Works
From May to October, volunteers collect water samples and measure water clarity monthly. We supply everything needed—kits include sample bottles, tools, instructions, and prepaid return postage. Volunteers simply collect, record, and send.
Get Involved
The program is growing, and we’re looking for more long-term volunteers. GBA is also seeking one Lake Partner Coordinator per member association to help liaise with volunteers and streamline communication.
