June 15th Water Levels
During the past week, conditions were fairly dry throughout the Great Lakes basin and temperatures were near normal for this time of year. In the week ahead, temperatures are expected to be warmer than normal with several chances for thunderstorms throughout the basin. The hottest day in the basin is forecasted for Sunday, as many places will see high temperatures near or above 90ᵒF. The chance for thunderstorms will linger throughout the weekend and into next week, which will bring locally heavy rain to some areas.
The water levels across the Great Lakes are above their long-term average levels for June. Lakes Michigan-Huron, St. Clair, and Erie are all above their levels from last year by 1 to 4 inches. In the last month, lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron rose 2 inches. In the next month, lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron are forecasted to rise another inch. Lake Superior’s outflow into the St. Marys River and Lake Michigan-Huron’s outflow into the St. Clair River are predicted to be above average in June.
Last week strong winds increased water levels on the east shore of Georgian Bay by around 2 inches and the levels then dropped back when the wind dropped.
