How TEK is Helping Great Lakes Sturgeon Recovery
Lake Sturgeon are one of the largest and longest-lived native fish species in the Great Lakes. Once abundant, the population of these giants is now only a fraction of what it used to be largely due to a century of overfishing coupled with habitat alteration and environmental pollution.
The IJC has been successfully integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into the recovery efforts for lake sturgeon whose populations are steadily increasing throughout all the Great Lakes. Many threats remain, particularly to spawning sites, but greater understanding will help to identify and act on solutions. Read more here.
