Canadian Government Moves Forward on Ballast Water Regulations
Ballast water, which is important for the safety and stability of lake vessels, can also introduce and spread aquatic invasive species. GBA has been calling for tighter ballast regulations to protect the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay from the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species. Following our update last year on upcoming improvements to ballast water legislation, the recent announcement of new Canadian regulations is a step in the right direction, but the industry is likely to ask that some inequities are addressed.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce has alerted the federal regulators that the new regulations unfairly target Canadian ship operators while giving extra time for compliance to US owners. See their concerns here.
