Some Success in the Battle to Limit Use of MZOs
GBA has been supporting the efforts of Environmental Defence and Ontario Nature, who were able to reach a legal agreement with the developer to halt development of the Duffins Creek wetlands until the groups are able to challenge this Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO) in court.
In addition, Pickering City Council voted unanimously to ask Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark to remove the western portion of the MZO that encompasses most of the provincially significant wetland.
This landmark case and the extent of the opposition should influence how MZOs are utilized going forward and persuade municipalities not to give in to developer pressure.
