We met with Coast Guard representatives this winter to find out more about the Coast Guard’s services and how GBA member associations can have a strong relationship with the Canadian Coast Guard in the Bay. As a Special Operating Agency within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Coast Guard oversees 243,000 kilometres of coastline and receives 7,000 Search and Rescue (SAR) Program calls annually. Th ey save on average thirteen lives in SAR incidents every day. The primary objectiv es of the SAR Program are to save 100% of lives at risk and reduce the number and severity of SAR incidents. They aim to minimize loss of life, injury, property damage and risk to the environment, but they will always place life over property.
